Event Security – Terrorist Fears
Terrorism has always been a major concern
when it comes to event security.
Some of the most high profile concerts have
taken place in recent years, including the Diana memorial concert
and the massive global Live Earth event. As well as concerts, other
high profile events such as Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show
have raised event security concerns. Ever since the UK faced two
failed terrorist attempts this year one outside a London nightclub
and the other at Glasgow airport – event security has never
been so high on the agenda. Event
Security a Top Priority
But event security has always been top of the priority
list for some countries. During the Live 8 concerts, Chechnya
had to call off one of the scheduled rock festivals due to concerns
over event security. Some acts had even refused to take part as
a result of fears over the event’s security measures. In
2003, a bomb exploded at a Moscow rock concert killing 16 –
Chechnya separatists were blamed.
Live Earth Event Security – The Biggest
Challenge
Live Earth was one of the biggest mass concerts
held simultaneously around the world. Eight cities held concerts
across 24 hours on 7 July, including London, Tokyo, Sydney and
Johannesburg. With superstars including Madonna and Elton John,
it’s no wonder event security was so high. But with the
expert event security measures, it went without a hitch. The concert
scheduled in Brazil was almost pulled over safety concerns, but
organisers persuaded a judge that event security measures were
in place to ensure safety. There were concerns police attention
would be inadequate as the force was focused on the Pan American
Games. However, event security companies allayed fears with dozens
of observation towers and platforms as well as security cameras.
Princess Diana Memorial Concert –
Increased Threat
When the Diana Memorial concert was held in July,
the UK was on a high terror alert. The Metropolitan Police introduced
extra event security measures at the event, warning people of
delays as a result of increased searches. The concert was a huge
success, despite the public’s fears of the increased terrorist
threat.
